Recent entries into Australia could be kept in hotel quarantine if they do not submit to being tested for COVID-19, Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy says, announcing a boost for testing at the border.

Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy has hinted people could be kept in hotel quarantine unless they agree to take COVID-19 tests.Professor Brendan Murphy says states have the power to keep people quarantined until they submit to a testEmphasising the risk coronavirus could still be imported into Australia, Professor Murphy said he was disappointed by reports from Melbourne that 30 per cent of people who have gone through hotel quarantine in Victoria had declined to take a test.

Speaking after today's meeting of National Cabinet, he said testing of people in hotel quarantine would be ramped up."We're seeing imported cases in hotel quarantine from a range of different countries now," he said. "The states have the powers … to say to someone well, we won't let you out of quarantine until you've been tested and had a clear test," he said.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the decision on how to administer the tests would ultimately be up to the states.

This man is an idiot, glad to see him go.

Article 13 of the UN Human Rights Charter. State refers to nation in this case. (1) Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state. (2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country

Fine them ( $****.00 ) each time and put them in enforced quarantine for 4 weeks. They'll soon change their mind faced with REAL consequences for endangering everyone else. Some people think their rights outweigh everyone else's , they need to learn there are REAL consequences.

If they won’t take the test, the presumption must be that they have the virus and need another three weeks in quarantine to clear it.

5151mpk Shouldn’t a CMO focus on encouraging the population to boost their immune system and live a healthy life, rather than isolate and get tested for some virus that has a global recovery rate of 98%

Good, let's do it

And so they should and if they break quarantine the need to be fined and put into guarded quarantine until they comply.

A great iatrogenic debacle.

refused?

They should not be given the option. Upon arrival in Oz, they are required to undertake the test.

Shame to see Murphy go. He has done an outstanding job. Australian of the year material.

its beyond belief that covid virus testing was not already mandatory for these returning quarantined travellers in VIC Now we know behind the smoke & mirrors of easy on the spot fines, its a shambles & explains Victoria's current state of crisis 3AW693 theage auspol 9NewsMelb
