A program at a Melbourne university designed to introduce high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds to a career in medicine is attracting increased interest after being moved online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ali Zarghami is a third-year medical student at Monash University in Melbourne, with dreams of specialising in emergency medicine.“I wanted to become a fireman, like my grandfather, to be that guy who would run into burning buildings and save people,” he told SBS News.Mr Zarghami was born in Iran, and at the age of three, he and his parents came to Australia to seek asylum.

“Growing up, I spent a lot of time in the hospital environment. We didn’t have any family here in Australia and the doctors and nurses were a bit like a second family to us in the way they cared for us.”Mr Zarghami Successful applicants are invited to spend two days at the university to get a taste of life as a medical student.

Phoebe Nelson, a Year 10 student at a school in Melbourne’s east, took the program online this month. She says it boosted her self-esteem and given her confidence that she’s on the right path to achieving a career in health.

This is great. I wish I had this opportunity.
