COVID-19: New cases in Ontario drop below 200, to a low not seen since March

After months of being told to avoid close contact with anyone who’s not a member of their immediate household, Ontarians are now being encouraged to establish a “social circle” of up 10 people, with whom physical distancing is no longer necessary.

“We know there are friends, families and loved ones who you haven’t been able to hug or come into close contact with in months,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford, at a Friday press conference. “Today, the public health guidelines will be changing. The social circle policy is effective immediately, province-wide, health minister Christine Elliot said Friday.

To clarify – the social circle concept is a public health recommendation, rather than a rule under law. Premier Doug Ford explained there’s no plans for enforcement around social circles Elliott also noted that 28 of Ontario’s 34 public heath units reported five or fewer new cases Friday, including 17 with no new cases. “That’s very positive news and confirms the regions are ready to reopen more services.”
