On Independence Day, the Gabriela Women’s Party staged a flash zumba dance in Marikina City against the Anti-Terrorism Bill, which the group tagged as the “single biggest threat to Filipinos’ basic freedoms and civil liberties.”
“This is an expression of women’s collective stance to defend our hard-fought freedoms and civil liberties, which the Duterte administration seeks to erase through the ‘state terror’ bill,” said Gabriela Representative Arlene Brosas in a statement posted on the group’s official Facebook page. The lawmaker, who voted against the passing of the measure at the Lower House, said the anti-terror bill “centralizes vast and arbitrary powers” in the hands of the Anti-Terrorism Council, which Brosas said will be composed of military generals “who are now bungling the government’s COVID-19 response.”
Photos shared by the group in its social media page showed at least 30 people wearing face masks participated in the flash zumba dance. The participants, who stood at least a meter apart, held small flags and a “Junk Terror Bill” letter cut-outs.
