People are purchasing pulse oximeters amid the COVID-19 pandemic, medical devices that measure the saturation of oxygen in red blood cells.

suggesting that the devices could provide early warnings about a need for treatment against COVID-19.is a medical device that measures the saturation of oxygen in a person's red blood cells. It typically clips to your finger, though it can also be attached at the ear, forehead, nose or toes.

Pulse oximeters are occasionally used in home settings for people who have underlying health conditions. They can also be found on Amazon, in pharmacies and in medical supply stores, although prices and quality can vary widely.

"If the question is, 'Would it be a good early indicator if somebody has COVID-19 infection?', I would say probably not," said Dr. J. Randall Curtis, a professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Washington. "One reason not to encourage everyone to go out and get one is there's a higher likelihood of having falsely low readings in a normal population," he said. "Then those people are going to be calling physicians or going into emergency rooms that are already busy for potentially something that's nothing."

Are they really CTV?

Well, if you've got the extra money to waste I guess you've gotta spend it on something when you get the urge to order online

Pointless. Unless you’re in a nursing home or over 80 years old virus is almost harmless.

Well that's stupid

if they record thier average HR over several days, an increased HR with feeling unwell could indicate the beginning of a fever.

I mean by the time the oximeter detects a drop in oxygen levels, I'm pretty sure you'll notice the wheezing?

We know this is not the killer pandemic government is pretending it is. Secure the Sr’s homes and let people feed their families. Hyping the hysteria is ethically and morally wrong. Enough

Hopefully not made in China. Otherwise they may get sn erroneous reading.

🙄

0.03% fatality rate

People should have these as a general home test, similar to the use of a thermometer. While I wouldn't suggest going in just because the number drops to 90, it is a good thing to have to monitor yourself over a few days. It can help for many illnesses like prolonged fatigue.

It doesn’t detect COVID but can help guide as to whether you need to seek medical attention. Great tool as COVID pt’s can look well but have dangerously low O2 sats. Plenty ER docs recommend ...

Stop promoting so much fear. you guys are terrible. Nothing but covid this and covid that.

I bought one in case one of use gets infected so we know for sure if we have to go into a hospital. I think this headline is misleading

How you supposed to detect coronavirus with this Siriuly!!!🤦‍♀️

Fake news

I was looking for a home MRI machine but then remembered I’m not a doctor. Just saying.

Stupid!

CNN Digital

Stupid....it doesn't take your temperature..so it's useless for that.
