It’s a term thrown around a lot by people campaigning for lockdowns to be lifted – but “herd immunity” is actually a myth, experts say.

Professor Raina MacIntyre, an infectious diseases expert, said if the country lifted lockdown there could be continued epidemics ofHerd immunity is the idea that exposing the population to the virus builds up natural immunity. About 60 per cent of the population, or 15 million people, wouldBut Prof MacIntyre, of the University of NSW’s Kirby Institute, said the concept of herd immunity was a myth.

“What you will see is a large increase in cases for little gain because probably by the time you get to about 20 to 30 per cent of the population impacted, you'll start putting the brakes on and having more lockdowns because the health system will be too severely impacted,” she said at a COVID-19 pandemic update at the institute.

“We'll have these cycling epidemics, large proportions of absenteeism from work and see the full spectrum of disease – as has been seen in the US, the UK, Europe and China – which is that you are seeing deaths in children, infants and young people.Herd immunity would mean millions of Australians would need to be infected with coronavirus.

Associate Professor Adam Kamradt-Scott, at the University of Sydney's Centre for International Security Studies, also said herd immunity wasn’t a good option.“We also don’t know whether there might be very minor mutations that would see a slightly different strain start to circulate. If that was to occur, we don’t know yet whether previous exposure would provide sufficient immunity.”

“We are making a lot of educated guesses at the moment based on previous pandemics but the fact is we haven't faced something like this in more than 100 years.”

There’s a lot of “experts” around at the moment isn’t there?

There is a bit of a rule of thumb with the virus . multiply the deaths by 100 to get the infecteds (esp asymptomatics) so we may have 600,000 all told (some cleared many not tested) Multiply deaths by a thousand? we dont have a herd immunity yet.. so its fiction

Misleading headline much? The article in no way suggests heard immunity is a myth, only that perusing is would be (in their opinion) destructive.

Blah, blah open the gym now! Time to get of our arses this is unhealthy. Want to save millions of lives? Ban sugar! I bet all the fat little lolly eaters loving the lockdown won’t do that.

Herd immunity is a myth, infectious disease experts warnIf Australia were to lift all restrictions in the pursuit of herd immunity we should expect cycling epidemics of COVID-19, increased absenteeism, and ultimately more deaths, one of Australia's leading pandemic experts has warned. Herd stupidity is rampant. Another day, another 'expert' opinion. SMH continuing to search under every rock for doomsday experts. The same ones that predicted 100,000 deaths in Australia.

Immunity from coronavirus after infection 'likely' but 'not guaranteed'Health Minister Greg Hunt says "on balance" previous exposure to COVID-19 could provide immunity to the virus but there is no guarantee. Looks like a bet each way here. Simply dont know ! Of course there is no guarantee. What else are they going to blame 5G sickness on if you develop 'antibodies' to the virus. First sickness I ever heard of where you don't develop immunity. If there is no guarantee why quarantine? Why vaccines? Liar, liar pants on fire.
