Home tests for coronavirus should be available to NHS staff across the UK"very soon", according to the government's testing co-ordinator.The government said lack of"demand" rather than capacity was behind the slow growth in testing numbers. They say long drives or difficulty accessing drive-through sites without a car were preventing staff from being tested.
A Downing Street spokesperson said the government was"absolutely standing by" its target of carrying out 100,000 tests per day by the end of April. The prospect of a home test offers some hope when it comes to another major barrier for staff: the test has to be done within the first few days of experiencing symptoms.
But overall, the proportion of staff who are eligible to be tested is actually quite small, she said. Ms Cordery estimated that roughly 150,000 staff are off at the moment, but about half of those will be suffering from other illnesses. Some will be shielding because of long-term conditions.
Why can't individual GPs linked with the care homes administer the tests?
Incomprehensible that it’s not possible to have mobile testing centres that can be set up in hospital or local car parks to allow testing to be accessible to front line workers.
When I got swabbed at my hospital I was handed the equipment & took the samples myself. I don’t think this is a normal/accurate photograph of the current process NHSworkers
BBC at it again
Boris johnson promised 250000 test a day a month ago. We are doing less than 10000 per day now. The UK government is an utter joke.
Today’s briefing mentioned the improvements in accessibility for tests, why is that not being reported?
There was something about Mohamed and the mountain in choosing those mega sites
Sensationalist headline with an extraordinarily boring story with no substance behind it. dontbefooled
it's the barriers to testing, only came online in last week, so no good if staff already off and no testing if symptoms started over 3- 5 days previously. So would be good to know what HCP with temperatures beyond 7 days do 're testing.
The tests need to be taken to the hospital car parks so they are more accessible, the numbers would rise dramatically then MattHancock
or can’t be arsed
Can the BBC not find any real news to broadcast? It appears all they are interested in is demonising our government. Enough is enough!!
