The teens took the injured koalas to a local wildlife centre for treatment after rescuing them from Flinders Chase National Park

A group of brave teenagers have rescued a carload of injured koalas from the bushfire affecting Kangeroo Island. The group drove through the fire-ravaged island's Flinders Chase National Park and rescued the furry friends, according to 7news ."Little fellas looking a little exhausted.Local media reported that around half of Kangaroo Island is thought to have been destroyed by the fires.

The teens said around 60 per cent of the koalas they came across had burned to death and sadly, one-fifth of the saved ones died within the first day due to their injuries. The Department of Environment says the remaining koalas must be managed locally to ensure they remain disease-free. "We’ve received reports that some koalas from Kangaroo Island have been taken to Adelaide by people who want to get help for them," bushfire recovery coordinator Brenton Grear said.

“It’s understandable and heartening that people want to rescue these animals, but unfortunately it will mean that those koalas can’t be returned to the island because of the risk of contamination of the population there.”
