PHOENIX – Public health officials in Arizona announced Thursday an outbreak of mumps in the Phoenix area. While it is not typically deadly, mumps can have serious, even lifelong health consequences.
“This is the first community-wide mumps outbreak that Maricopa County has seen in decades and serves as a reminder of why it’s so important to get vaccinated for diseases that we can prevent,” Sunenshine said. Mumps is an extremely contagious viral infection of the salivary glands, yet the symptoms for mumps don't appear for two to three weeks after contraction. And the symptoms resemble the flu, with a minor fever, body aches and headaches.
A person with mumps is considered contagious one to two days before swelling of the salivary glands starts, meaning people can unknowingly spread it to others.
