How to talk to your family about mental health this Christmas

“Sometimes it’s more difficult to open up to your friends and family than it is to a stranger. Starting the conversation does, however, have huge potential benefits, such as increased family support and reassurance.

What do you want out of the conversation? Do you just want to let them know what’s going on, or do you need their support in seeking help? Make sure you’ve got an aim in mind before you dive into it.Demi Lovato just reminded us how important it is to talk to friends about our mental health “Being specific, clear and direct will help get your point across. For example, it will help to talk to them as much as you can about exactly how your symptoms have been impacting your life.”It’s also important to consider when and where you’re going to start the conversation: “Once you’re feeling ready to have a conversation, choose a time and place that’s comfortable and private,” adds Love.

In these cases, it’s important to stay calm and explain exactly where you’re coming from. Spell out the fact that mental health is often undetermined by situational issues, and it’s a health issue instead. Using comparisons can also be helpful: remind them that, if they were suffering from a persistent back pain, they would seek help – and that it’s the same with mental health conditions.
