An awareness of the lesser known complications of diabetes may bring down this figures and the month of November has been dedicated this.The Nigerian Dental Association in a series of educational tweet on its twitter handle @nigdental said there is direct link between oral health – specifically, periodontal diseases and diabetes.
According to the tweet, it is very essential to always keep blood sugar in check by doing regular assessment and generally living a healthier lifestyle.It said it is common for the dentist to ask about diabetic history or request a blood sugar test be carried before certain procedures “because every dentist major fear in diabetics is poor wound healing and an increased susceptibility to infections”.
It can also lead to loss of teeth resulting from damage to supporting tissues, increase risk of oral infection and enhances bad mouth odor.
