SASKATOON — Saskatchewan’s health minister says the government will consider whether to help fund what would be the province’s first supervised drug consumption site.AIDS Saskatoon, which focuses on harm reduction and supports people who live with AIDS, HIV and hepatitis C, plans to open the site in the new year.
Jason Mercredi, AIDS Saskatoon executive director, said there’s a real need for a supervised consumption site and feels confident the government will offer funding.“When you look at the amount of overdoses that are happening in this community, when you look at the amount of HIV infections that are happening … predominantly from injecting drugs, a space like this makes sense.
“Generally speaking, across the country, police chiefs are saying when a safe injection site opens the demand on police services increases,” he said.Mercredi believes that by operating 24 hours a day, his group’s site would save the province health-care costs by getting people out of hospital emergency rooms.
Not a good move
Well, they are as stupid as ontario
SISs keep people alive until follow up reassures are available. so in that sense, you are dead wrong. So many dead.
Well it sure makes sense instead of having discarded needles all over the place.
Supervised consumption sites only work when the follow up resources are available. Funding them when there is a lack of treatment spaces is putting the cart before the horse.
Sad that this is such a necessity in this country now. 😥
