A rally has been planned for later this week outside University Hospital Waterford to protest against the conditions at the hospital's psychiatric unit which the Health Service Executive has admitted are "unacceptable".
The Mental Health Commission has said it is taking the matter seriously and the unit's Chief Executive John Farrelly said it is "an absolutely unacceptable situation". The HSE acknowledged that there can be "instances of over-capacity" in the Department of Psychiatry at UHW and said that, in some cases, patients can be offered chairs and blankets if a bed is not available.
