There’s no denying that we were made different. We tend to be more generous, more loving, more funny, more creative, and more entrepreneurial. The problem, it turns out, is not within our own selves. The problem is with the society we were born into.
You see, people with ADHD are hunter gatherers in a farmer’s world. For much of human history, heightened senses were critical to survival, and hunter gatherers were supreme. They were able to hear footsteps from yards away, hear water flowing, smell a change in environment, and much more. The problem is, the world evolved. Resources became more readily available, and the need for hunter gatherers decreased.
I know this quote is cliché, however, it holds truth in this context: “Everyone is a genius,” Albert Einstein said. “But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.”, I believed that I was a lazy, no good piece of shit whose problems were all self-inflicted. I would try so hard to do well, but it never worked so I eventually stopped trying. I gave up.
Why do you call it a mental health disorder? It's not, and only adds to the stigma, it doesn't subtract. Last I heard, it was neurological, with anxiety, depression and PTSD frequently co-ocurring with pre and post- birth traumas.
Society isn't always great for us but it isn't the reason I can't relax with my family, or why I forget tasks, or why I can't do things I actually want to do. ADHD is the reason.
This is a good article EXCEPT for the title. ADHD is not a mental health disorder. That title reveals the internalized blame the author still carries. It's a difference in the way information is processed, and has neurological components.
If Devon, the writer of this article can see this…I am proud of you and i am happy that you got your diagnosis and you’re absolutely correct!! Society is the problem!! Never stop believing in yourself 💙
Again, this suggests that society is forcing me to want to spend the evening relaxing with my family. It isn't. I want that. My brain actively doesn't though. It's a neurological hyperactivity and motivation disorder, not just a problem with society.
I disagree that ADHD is a 'mental health disorder'. There is a strong neurological component here. The disorders are often the accompany anxiety, sensory, & learning disorders, as well as common comorbidities of depression. And isnt a lot of it how inconvenient we are to others?
Before my diagnosis, I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t get my shit together despite how much I wanted to. I was constantly asking myself “what is WRONG with you”

Because I insisted on a diagnosis appointment with a doctor, at 52 years old, for autism, the first time in my life someone said I probably have ADHD. I have always had symptoms for both. *deep exhausted sigh*
