Nigerian varsities ‘won’t grow without autonomy’

THE Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti , Chief Afe Babalola and immediate past Chief Medical Director of the University of Ibadan College Hospital , Prof Temitope Alonge, have described lack of autonomy and funding as major factors militating against the growth of Nigerian universities.

He noted that the meddlesomeness of the political elite in the university administration has polluted university education. Expressing dissatisfaction with the refusal of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to fund private universities, he said: “It is unacceptable and immoral for private universities that accounted for 45 per cent of the universities in Nigeria to be denied grants and subvention.

“…Apart from imbibing moral education, ABUAD’s 400-bed multi-system hospital, sporting activities, entrepreneurial derivable, farm products, wood processing industry and administrative and unique organisational structure, are gradually reviving the hope of university education in Nigeria.
