John Bercow has"strayed" from the rule of law over Brexit and is making it look like he wants to"load the dice in one particular direction", one of his deputy speakers has suggested.
Eleanor Laing, who is running to replace him as Commons Speaker at the start of next month, delivered a thinly-veiled attack of his"macho behaviour" and perception of bias. She warned that"the health of our democracy is at risk" and hit out at the delay to implementing recommendations from a report into abuse and bullying in parliament."Trust in our democracy has been badly rattled. Parliament and the country are at breaking point over Brexit, in large part due to the perception that our tried and tested constitutional traditions are being manipulated to load the dice in one particular direction," Ms Laing wrote in the Sunday Telegraph.
"The Speaker needs to be an independent anchor of our proceedings, unaffected by an allegiance to any political objective or to any party or group within Parliament, upholding our rules and conventions and applying them consistently." She added that"the rule of law has bound this country together for centuries" but"it seems as if we have strayed from these concepts recently and too many decisions have been made behind closed doors".

She may have a point over the problems of harassment and bullying, but otherwise got this totally wrong. The speaker is standing up for Parly procedure against an undemocratic, unelected government, trying to force through its proposals without consulting us all!

She is absolutely right, it doesn't take a lot of working out. He is a remainer and clearly influenced amendments and votes in that direction. He should be ashamed of himself misusing this important role in that way. That will be his legacy, I hope he's happy with that.
