Specifically, the work of Prof Patrick Then and Dr Brian Loh uses algorithms and machine learning techniques to detect abnormalities in stress echocardiograms.
“It’s like we train the computer programme to see what a normal heart looks like, and what is not normal .... until the programme is able to identify the abnormal symptoms,” said Prof Then, who heads the Information and Communications Technologies School at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus.“Once it detects an anomaly, it doesn’t mean the patient has a heart attack. That is still down the road.
“I found that no one had utilised these techniques in stress echocardiograms. Because of that, I modified the algorithms and created our own neural network to detect abnormalities within stress echocardiograms.
