When an American college student seeks mentalhealth help on campus right now, it can take weeks to get an appointment. That's a dangerous window of time for someone struggling with depression or contemplating suicide—and it needs to change.

In August 2016, when she landed on the leafy, almost comically picture-perfect campus of Ithaca College in upstate New York, Makai probably seemed, to the other freshmen, like she was doing just fine. She fell in quickly with a core group of friends, and soon they were watching TV in the lounge, cruising to house parties, and venturing over the hill to frats at neighboring Cornell.She sometimes got so gripped by social anxiety that she could barely form sentences.

So even if you do “get in” to an appointment, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will be helped. You may just be shunted through the system like cattle. A system the students fund!

When I was an undergrad at the University of TN, Knoxville, I made an appt to talk with a counselor. He barely looked at or acknowledged me when he came in, looked over my chart and said “you are fine” and that was it. Less than 2 minutes. I was crushed and humiliated.

Between 2010-2016, the number of students seeking on-campus counseling shot up by 30%. The result? By 2018, 34% of school health centers reported wait times, per the AUCCCD. mentalhealth
