On WorldMentalHealthDay, what can we learn from Joker’s portrayal of mental illness and its relationship to violence? Three forensic psychiatrists discuss:

Amidst the swirling cultural and political maelstrom spurred by a slew of mass shootings, speculation about their causes, and a renewed national debate about how to prevent them, Todd Phillips’ critically acclaimedstormed cinemas last week, opening to a record-breaking October box office.

While concerns the film could inspire at-risk individuals to commit acts of copycat violence may have some validity, what is unquestionable is howreinforces negative and inaccurate stereotypes about mental illness and the nexus between mental illness and violence.

Very interesting.

The point the movie made was that mental illness can make people feel trapped, even desperate, especially when they aren't getting the help they need. As someone who's suffered from mental-health issues, I can say this is true, at least for me.

Still at it ...

This is insanely biased reporting... I'd love to ask the psychiatrist questioned here if they would consider mass Shooters to be of sound mental health...?

Love that forensic psychiatrists are willing to pick apart a fictional character but I, like many others, cannot get help for severe ptsd that’s crippling my life.

I’m not clicking on your clickbait bs

Enough with the Joker news. Stop criticizing and dissecting the movie to shit. It was clearly a success and it worked. Nearly 400 million worldwide💲💁🏻‍♂️

Maybe the article should be written by the people who sugger from mental illness, and no the people who clearly don't know how to treat them ...

THR you are laughable.

As someone who has suffered with depression & mental illness most of my life, I found the Joker film to be absolutely cathartic and a tremendous healing experience. And to reinterpret a quote from the film: I Use To Think My Life Was A Tragedy... Until I Saw This JokerMovie.

The joker movie does not rely on mental illness as an excuse for violence, it quite clearly paints mental trauma as a CONSEQUENCE of suffering and being the victim of violence. This article is absolutely horrible and disrespectful

Who wrote this stupid article

The biggest thing that can be learned from this movie is to be kind to each other...

You're really are trying that hard... You incompetent

Such a great movie. You are giving it free promotion with this articles, the irony.

How much is disney paying ya'll? 🙄

Contrast this with your reporting on “Captain Marvel”, when all we got were updates every 30 minutes on how much money it was making.

We need a wellness check on the media, film critics, and now the psychiatry profession over a fictional character lol

Please stop.

Mental illness has been a part of the Batman mythos since it's inception. Half of the rogues gallery are locked away in Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane.

Every version of the 'Joker' was mentally ill.

You guys still haven't given up?

jokermovie is just a movie and..an insane asylum is one of the bigger plot points in the (fictional) Batman ethos

no.

Here we go again!

It's a fvcking comic book character

I hate you people. Jesus

It’s a movie. 😐

Horseshit.

Probably... jokermovie I'm not seeing it, and just waiting to hear the insane logic people push. FBI already came to my house and asked if I was going to see it. I said no, I read the comic books billmaher fucking garbage tier movies these days; canceled cable for books tho..

Really, again with the same situation you blame a movie for this, the blame is yours all the media, the social media, your president that create a lot of hate, not a movie. Tomorrow you are going to said that the responsible of the bulling in the schools is the joker movie

No it does not. Next.

Personally i do not think he is mentaly ill! In this movie! I mean if others treatment to him was a little nicer , he wouldnt become a....

Pathethic article

just say you hate white men already, stop dancing around it w these dumb articles and just admit it

Nope

It’s. A. Movie.

No, it just reinforces the trend of thinking that a bad story + dark and gritty atmosphere = good cinema.

MindHunter!!!

No way. Does Taxi driver does the same? PulpFiction? Dark Knight? The silence of the lambs? Cmon!!!

I muted this hashtag and the word and yet, it still comes up in my time line....wtaf? Stop posting about this thing!

Just let the movie be!

Does THR reinforce negative and inaccurate stereotypes about news media “stupid question tweets” and the nexus between credible authority and click baiting?

We get it all ready.. you guys hate the movie! Stop beating it down

No, no it doesn't.

You don't listen, do you? Someone is obsessive haha. I've just realized you just want to get likes and RT XD you are no interested on mental illness

Guess who is laughing now..🤡

Didn't particularly like the film or His performance.. Like a shit cesar romero.

Ugh!

No.

No, it reinforces the idea that nobody cares about people with mental illnesses, that the health system is failing and that people (like the one that wrote this headline) always try to find somebody else to blame - mainly a person who actually suffers from a mental illness.

No.

Its InTiLeCtUaL BeCaUsE I sAiD 'nExUs'.

That‘s it, I‘m unfollowing you. I don‘t know who‘s paying you but this Joker bashing has gotten ridiculous

Joker is a VILLAIN not a hero! Why would you expect him to be anything else, wannabes?

No no and no. Incredible film.

I think it's shining a light on an important issue that is often ignored in our world and it is a prime example of how the government has failed society.

I’m not sure, but this intensely harmful film certainly did.

They shouldn’t have made him mentally ill, nor should they have made him a serial killer. There will never be a decent Batman movie again because they took the best villain, Joker and made him into something he never was before. There will be no more JOKER in Batman movies.

Let us enjoy things. FUUUUCK!!!!

Am I blocking hollywood reporter? Yes.

Give it up. You lost.

Yes! I do not believe it is deliberately raising awareness and is purely a plot point to try and justify his actions.

Isnt that the point of the story?

It’s a movie.

We are all jokers, some of us will never show the pain, the face of been hurting, some of us never seek help, some of us we just punch the button that says: fuck it.

No. Thank you, next.

Omg, you clearly have some unhealthy obsession with this movie.

Does Jesus reinforce negative and inaccurate stereotypes about mental illness when he says mental illness is simply the presence of demons? Why does Jesus get a pass and Joker pays a price? Which impacts more people? Christians believe demons are the cause. Address. Discuss.

No

It reinforces the reality of the dangers that exist just below the surface of some mental health diagnoses. Bipolar and borderline personality disorder... they can snap at the drop of a dime and sometimes become violent or wreck less to the death. Joker is real.

No.

Yes

Stop insulting moviegoers and your readership. We do not need a group of psychiatrists to tell us about the the link between mental illness and violence. We get it. You have continually tried to slam JokerMovie because it doesn't fit your formulaic Hollywood narrative.

No.

2 negative articles per day on Joker. Task given to editors of THR. Unfortunately, nothing affects the movie.

um...you do know that the Joker in the comics is actually crazy.... i mean...seriously....

And “Last tango in Paris” reinforces negative stereotypes about butter.

bullying causes violence. please stop

You keep talking about Joker as if there were some plot or argument behind it.

Can you guys shut up already? Stop trying to force a false narrative on the movie and maybe actually look at what it’s trying to say!

I don't get it HR, everytime there's a white guy behind the gun in some mass shooting the media immediately excuses him as mentally disturbed. If it's a someone other than white, they are a instantly labeled as a radicalized hater of America. So come on, what gives?

It’s a fucking movie!

ENOUGH WITH THIS BULLSHIT

Depends on the viewer

THR is weak they need to create shit.

Another day. Another article attacking the Joker movie.

Pretty sure it was just a movie about a fictional made up villain.

Don’t think it was trying to stereotype, it was it’s own story & hell of a good one. He had a mental illness but he’s also obviously a psychopath. So many reactions good or bad is a good add cause it stroke a nerve. The movie was great. I was impressed tbh.

What happened to you guys? I thought this was an idiotic CNN tweet, at first.

Doesn't every horror film feature somebody with a mental illness? Reaching much?

No, but you reinforce negative and VERY accurate stereotypes about reporting and the nexus between the media and ridiculous articles.

IT'S NOT THAT DEEP.

Or maybe its just a movie for entertainment and distraction 🤷‍♀️

Hmmm. I was thinking something similar after I read your piece, “Home Alone : Child Abandonment Is No Laughing Matter”

It’s 👏🏼 A 👏🏼 fucking 👏🏼 movie 👏🏼.

Not all people are the same. Not all mental illnesses are the same. I think the Joker is an awesome example of the extreme side of things. Nothing controversial about it. I don’t think we’re far from such a thing from happening, if mental illness isn’t taken more seriously.

Next article: Does Thanos reinforce negative stereotype about Narcissistic personality disorder?

Nope. Looked pretty accurate to me

Omg thr let it go! Does Michael Myers hurt mentally ill people? It's a damn movie about a comic book character 😂

Jesus Christ you people are pathological about this film now 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Yeah, I'm sure there's no connection

*yawn

No, it fucking doesn't

Give it a rest. The mass shooting that you secretly wanted didnt happen. Now it's time to move on and look towards the rest of the movies coming out this year.

My god, someone at REALLY hates this movie! Lmao every day they write a different bad article about it

I didn’t realize it was a documentary.

Hard eye roll

Fantastic & informative article, though I dare say most of the annoying 'fan boys' of this film will refuse to read it.

BJMendelson It's a movie based on a comic book people. You should not be getting your mental health education from Batman.

It wasnt his mental illness that made the Joker evil....did you hacks even watch the movie?

So now just the plain fact that the Joker IS INDEED mentally ill is a controversy? When is this selective outrage garbage going to finally exhaust itself

In light of WorldMentalHeathDay, the Joker film brings to light how imperative it is for us to truly address child abuse and bullying while shocking us how destructive a disturbed mind can get when left unchecked.

You know what, you’re trying to make Joker to be politically correct and all that shit but you’re not recognizing that it is deliberately made to be disruptive and disturbing. It’s MEANT TO MAKE US FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE and denying that film’s aspect defeats the purpose.

💛 wunderbar wonderful performance of Yoaquin Phoenix, Oscars2020 Oscar make-up OscarWinner

JSolis82 Zzzzzzzz

😂😂😂 joker is mentally ill It's who he is It's his backstory

The more you write negative crap about the movie the more people will go to see it.

Tell that to Bob Kane and Bill finger

Oh no! We've gone and offended the loonies.

Joker is insane that is why he always end up in asylum.

Guess who's click you're not getting? I'll give you a hint: It starts with 'm' and ends with 'ine'.

It’s a movie

ACTUALLY, we disagree. The story is missing the greatest aspect of film- the ability to teach w/out imposing. The fact that TheJoker takes on mental illness when so many will not is courageous. Lastly, maybe we’ll be less persecutory and more empathic. TY JoshBrolin

Your freelancers are making you out to be incompetent. This is Trump levels of stupidity here.

Should the guy who dresses up like a clown, laughs all the time, and commits murder been 100% sane? This is why you don't make movies, Hollywood Reporter.

Just let it go

ivygirl851 interesting that many on Twitter who have a mental illness celebrated the movie for bringing the issue to the forefront BUT we can always do the same old thing and ignore this big problem of society.....that´s also an idea

Terrible take, I’m glad it did and really pointed out how little support is available for people goin through it.

Oh come on 🤦🏾‍♀️ who’s next? VibeMagazine ?

Here in Italy after 7 days joker has surpassed the final box office of captain Marvel and black panther and it's coming for the last spider man before Sunday. Retweet to make THR crazy about it.

Lol why do you think Batman’s villains end up in a asylum, they are all mentally ill and why you and the other outlets can’t accept that is shocking to me. You rather the character just suddenly turn into a villain without cause because it fits your underlying agenda

Because it suggests that people with a mental illness are one missed bottle of pills away from a spree?

The movie is about a mentally ill person..
