Long-term Lyme disease 'actually chronic fatigue syndrome'

The majority of people who believe they have a chronic form of Lyme disease are more likely to have chronic fatigue syndrome, experts suggest. Most of those who take antibiotics make a full recovery within months.

Speaking at a Science Media Centre briefing, she added:"And because there is increased awareness about it, they are testing for Lyme disease and then they are going on to various different Lyme disease forums on the internet and being told, 'Well actually the UK tests are rubbish, but you need to send it off to Germany.'

Dr Logan said it could be that chronic fatigue syndrome was a difficult diagnosis for doctors to give, because it could be hard for patients to get treatment and support, and because of persisting negative views of the condition. Dr Matthew Dryden, a consultant microbiologist at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said he was also concerned about the issue of"chronic" Lyme disease.

Tother way round wankpuffins!

Yes, it is

What are you doing? Any doc who publicly states a diagnosis of patient/patients that they have never seen or spoken to or taken a history should be struck off the medical register. BBC, you are being used to stir up anti-Lyme sentiment. And doing it without due diligence. Shame!

Why have you ignored evidence from Lyme researchers and academics. This is a poor article with no substance. It’s sounds like it’s just spouting from a government spokesperson. Ashamed of the BBC.

Will the BBC publish the inevitable backlash/response to this article from other academics? It’s as if all the scientific evidence of persistent Lyme disease, and literature on ME/CFS has been ignored

'we do not believe it’s right to say that UK patients who receive a negative test (and perhaps a positive from a different overseas lab) are more likely not to have the disease. The fact is that we DNK for sure, because the results of tests in the UK are not always accurate.'2/2

'Limitations to the current NHS Lyme disease tests have been acknowledged within the NICE Guideline, and by medical professionals...' 1/2

You fail to mention a few important facts. There is no new research this is literally just rehashing the accepted 'wisdom'. The official tests for Lyme are also unreliable. Many cases of Lyme are likely to be missed and remain untreated because of doctors lack of knowledge.

This is the most bullshit article I’ve ever read

At the end of this article is a link to an article in June that presented a woman’s case as chronic Lyme’s rather than CFS. Maybe acknowledge that in your updated article?
