A baby gets an oral anti-polio vaccine during the launch of a campaign to end the resurgence of polio after health authorities confirmed a polio case in the country Friday, Sept. 20, 2019 at suburban Quezon city northeast of Manila, Philippines.
“More than 18 million people are able to walk today who would otherwise have been paralyzed, and 1.5 million childhood deaths have been averted thanks to the polio vaccine,” the WHO said. Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said that they were targeting to immunize at least 5.5 million children under five-years-old.
The WHO noted that in areas where there were inadequate sanitation and hygiene, “the excreted weakened virus can spread in the immediate community before eventually dying out.”
