The chairman of the Public Accounts Committee has described figures released by the HSE, which show 210,600 medical card applications have been cancelled since 2016, as “truly shocking”.
In its response to the parliamentary question, the HSE said applications were refused when a “comprehensive assessment of eligibility” could not be carried out because the applicant had failed to provide the appropriate documentation/material “within a reasonable timeframe”. “Proof of all income must be supplied, and in many cases letters need to be obtained from consultants, forms have to be signed by doctors and photocopies of bills must be submitted as evidence of need,” he said. “It’s particularly hard for those with special needs or the elderly, and they often require assistance in submitting the form.”
