People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) grieved the passing of former environment secretary Regina Paz “Gina” Lopez Monday.

Former DENR secretary and ABS CBN Foundation chairman Regina Paz “Gina” Lopez at the PETA campaign to free elephant “Mali” from the Manila Zoo. PETA Manager Ashley Fruno said: “Her passion for protecting the planet made her a leader for animal and environmental protection.”

The group also recalled how Lopez’s passion to protect animals helped their campaign to free elephant “Mali” from the Manila Zoo. “We hope people will emulate her example by following their hearts to do what’s right, fighting for the environment and animals by standing up for them, and speaking up for Mali, who deserves to live in freedom and happiness at a sanctuary,” the group said.

“One of her greatest dreams was to see Mali free from loneliness and suffering at the Manila Zoo,” PETA said in their statement.Regina Lopez died at 65 after battling with brain cancer.
