Electric fans are bad for your health in dry heatwaves

ELECTRIC fans are bad for your health when trying to cool down in dry heatwaves, a major study has warned.

However, when the weather is both hot and humid, fans actually lowered all three measures, according to the findings published inScientists from the University of Sydney in Australia monitored 12 male participants for two hours in conditions similar to two types of heatwaves - one that was hot and dry and one that was cooler but more humid. They found that in the hot and dry conditions, with a heat index of about 115F , all three measures were raised.

The researchers say that while their findings aren't based on scientific evidence they could help prevent people suffering from dehydration or heatstroke. Ruth May, chief nursing officer for England, said the risk of serious illness is much higher for the elderly, children and young people, and those who already have health conditions including heart and breathing problems.
