Obituary: Andrew Dibner found a way for old people on their own to send out a signal of medical distress

The idea came to Andrew Dibner one morning in 1972 while he was shaving: Shouldn’t there be a way for old people to call for help if they fell in their homes and couldn’t reach the phone?

Dr. Dibner, a psychologist specializing in aging, went to work at his dining room table with his wife, Susan Schmidt Dibner, on a business plan. They hired an unemployed engineer to help with the design of a device that could be worn around the neck or a wrist. An early prototype had a transmitter inside a child’s plastic toothbrush holder.
