Instagram is expanding a test to hide how many"likes" people's posts receive as it tries to combat criticism that such counts hurt mental health and make people feel bad when comparing themselves to others.
One group that may be affected is Instagram"influencers," the major, minor or micro celebrities who use social media to market products and otherwise influence their hordes of followers. After all, if you post a photo and no one likes it, did you really post it? Hilton, who has a personal account as well as one for his dog, the latter with more than 3,200 followers, added that he understands why Instagram is doing this. Hilton said his younger sister, who is in high school, is"obsessed" with likes.

Anyone who judges another person by how many likes they have is not likeable. Anyone who judges themselves on how many likes they get is insecure. It's just a game.

I don't care of Instagram does this, but I have trouble with the underlying concept. I heard a similar theme discussed on 'Hidden Brain' concerning 'vacation envy' on Facebook. It seems to me that people whose self-esteem is that fragile have bigger problems than social media.
