The final report of the Productivity Commission is scathing of the treatment of Australia’s veterans, finding the current system is so out of date some parts of it go back to the 1920s.

The report says the department is not working in the best interests of former service personnel and their dependents, saying it is overly complex, inequitable and poorly administered. The Commission is calling for a new stand-alone agency to be established, called the Veterans' Services Commission, focusing on injuries, illness, rehabilitation and transition.
