"We would love to be able to do our research here but unfortunately currently we can't do our clinical trials here," Professor Petrovsky said.
He said a number of years ago, the CEO of the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network instructed him not to do his trials at the Flinders Medical Centre."For one of the trials we were midway through recruitment, so some people had received their full course of vaccines, some people had only received one or two vaccines," Professor Petrovsky said.
Professor Petrovsky said he had raised his concerns with various layers of health system management, including Health Minister Stephen Wade, and still does not understand why clinical trials at the Flinders Medical Centre had been stopped. "We believe our vaccine is much better than what's out there currently, and in the face of what is one of our worst flu epidemics in South Australia for many decades, we can't apply our vaccine to help," he said.
"Maybe we could've if we'd been allowed to continue to develop that vaccine … we're just trying to save lives."
