Italian doctors have said it should be compulsory for children to have the MMR jab to stop the spread of measles
The head of NHS England, Simon Stevens, recently warned of a ‘growing public health bomb’ and said anti-vaxxers were using social media to spread ‘dangerous and inaccurate scare stories.’ They concluded that in order to keep the percentage of the population susceptible to catching measles under 7.5% by 2050 – the level at which measles is regarded as eliminated – further action is needed.Either far more people need to be vaccinated or a schools policy should be brought in, they said.
That is far below the 95% the World Health Organisation say is needed to give ‘herd immunity’ – the level necessary to protect a population from a disease. The researchers said: ‘Our results suggest that most of the countries would strongly benefit from the introduction of compulsory vaccination at school entry in addition to current routine immunisation programmes.’
The MMR vaccine is given as part of the routine childhood immunisation schedule. The first dose is given around the time of a child’s first birthday and the second at three years, four months.Take up of the vaccine was affected after the publication of a controversial study by Andrew Wakefield in 1998, which claimed there was a link between the MMR jab and autism.
She added that starting university would be a good chance for people to catch up on missed vaccinations when people change GP surgeries.
