The NSW Government's decision to join the national violence prevention agency Our Watch has thrilled survivor advocates and peak bodies, who say the long-overdue move will change the way primary prevention work in the state is coordinated.
Announcing the decision on Friday, the new Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence Mark Speakman said joining Our Watch would build on the government's ongoing efforts to tackle the scourge of abuse across the state. "Our membership with Our Watch will build on these efforts and send a clear message that this behaviour won't be accepted."Domestic Violence NSW chief executive Moo Baulch said the move was a"significant step forward" that demonstrated the government's commitment to preventing violence against women, though she said it had taken sustained campaigning from advocates and sector workers.
Every state and territory in Australia is a member of the leading national violence prevention agency — except the country's biggest and richest.
At least they mentioned domestic violence related suicide. How many men take their lives because they don't get believed?
As a strong supporter of DV prevention & support, it still baffles me that male victims are not supported with the same gusto as female victims. Assistance given to women still leave our male victims vulnerable and in the exact same situation as those we are trying to help
Oh, I think we ALL know the real reason for that - the LNP govt.
