JM: It wasn't all that long ago that we were hearing about the French paradox: how moderate amounts of red wine were beneficial to human health. The Mayo Clinic's website acknowledges that,"moderate alcohol consumption may provide some health benefits, such as: reducing your risk of developing and dying from heart disease, reducing your risk of ischemic stroke and reducing your risk of diabetes.
The evidence showing that moderate drinkers live longer than teetotalers, mostly due to the benefits of alcohol on the heart, is very strong. It has been tested and retested over decades precisely because there are so many people who are inclined to disbelieve it.
JM: The World Health Organization has been lobbying for a strict ban on virtually all forms of alcohol advertising. The proposed ban goes so far as to ban signs in front of distilleries. Various EU members have adopted some of these recommendations. Most recently Ireland has instituted a ban, starting in November 2019, on many forms of alcohol advertising, even as the very same Irish government is conducting a campaign to encourage whiskey related tourism in Ireland.
JM: Many countries are moving toward legalizing medical and recreational use of marijuana. Canada has legalized marijuana consumption, including the use of cannabis related additives in food and beverages. In the US, about nine states have done the same,

Embrace the omnivore.
Anything that impacts productivity or that could potentially use taxpayer money that otherwise would go into the pockets of those in power (or their friends) is to be demonized!
