Texas bill is latest attempt to curb the spread of diabetes and other health complications linked to poor diet.

A study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that stores market sugary drinks more heavily on days when SNAP benefits are issued. By Laura Reiley Laura Reiley Reporter covering the business of food Email Bio Follow May 1 at 1:11 PM Texas state legislators are taking fresh aim at energy drinks, soda and candy. State Rep.

A study in the “American Journal of Preventive Medicine” found that stores market sugary drinks more heavily on days when SNAP benefits are issued, which might in part explain the $700 million bill for beneficiaries’ sweet tooth. “Before 2015, there were no guideline for added sugar. We set a threshold,” Mary Story, a scholar in the field of child and adolescent nutrition at Duke’s Global Health Institute and a member of the USDA’s 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, said in a recent interview.

“People are wired from an early age to like sweetness and fats,” Story said, citing misleading labeling for perpetuating the overconsumption of added-sugar calories. “You can put health claims and nutrition claims and pictures of fruit on a label. Look at Sunny D, it’s not a fruit drink but there are pictures of fruit on the label.

Daniel Lubetzky, the billionaire chief executive of the KIND snack company, has begun waging his own battle about added-sugar labeling.

When you are writing your articles, please refer to either type 1 or type 2 in your articles and don't just say 'diabetes'. Type 1 and type 2 are completely different. This article is all about type 2. Don't use the word 'diabetes' as a whole when this is all about type 2.

Agree, cigarettes & alcohol are also no-no, right?

Oh snap

This is not a certain country's problem but a whole world's hazard . It's everything is harmful ,the contender plus the contents are all poisoning mankind and the environment.

Good move !!

This is absolutely stupid. While more healthy food is good, if you can prepare it, junk food is often the only thing homeless people can really survive on. Easy to store, little preparation required, and you don't need heating or cooling, or pots and pans.

This isn’t exactly a “Let them eat cake” moment WAPO......smh.

Not even debatable

Sugar subsidies still a-ok tho

Mountain Dew is king in Texas along with dentures

Yeah, poor people don't deserve sodas, those are reserved for the 1%! Make diabetes great again!

About time.

good. if you take taxpayer money via the government to simply buy food, then the government, on behalf of taxpayers, should limit what you can buy with that money. it's not complex.

The actual issues are; most people can’t budget SNAP to last a whole month, anyone in household entitled to use benefit card (including kids), most people don’t know how to grocery shop and prepare food.

I get it ... but lets allow double the benefits when purchasing fresh produce, meats, eggs and cheese. Also, lets get this into farmers markets (again, double the benefits).

Shouldn't everyone in Texas (15th in State obesity rate) give up sugary drinks?

Since when does a state have jurisdiction over a federal program?

How about a ban on the capitalist who make these unhealthy foods and sugary drinks to be sold knowing the horrible effects on our health? Not only Snap recipients need protection. How about starting there since we want to control ppl.

So let me get this right. People who can't take care of themselves or move forward in life are now stuck 4-ever on the government tit? Making bad life, diet and health decisions? Requiring Big Brother to now further control the lives of these slackers.? SHOCKER!!!!

Inner cities often do not have access to large grocery store chains. Sometimes corner store run by mom & pop are only options & these are not loaded w/fresh food that spoils quickly.

only bread and water

good! NYGovCuomo should do the same

Good. We don’t need to pay for their food, and then their bypass surgery.

Problem?

Just throw sodas and sugary drinks away. First of all we don’t need this excess of plastic. And we all know sugar is bad for health. It would save people office visits to the doctor 🤑 What if we replaced it with a water fountain where you have to bring your own reusable bottle?

If they removed all the sugary drinks from Texas, maybe the people would finally cool and start to think like humans about all things they've done and what's at stake in this world. Outside of Austin, they all seem brain addled

In other news: The US government may use my tax payments only for social programs and not for military spending or debt service.

This is a start, but they also have to make SNAP benefits usable at places like farmer's markets and other places where fresh foods are sold. The junk food is only part of the issue, the processed and pre-packaged meals are a bigger problem.

We must make sure that healthy alternatives are therefore available. Grocery deserts exist and sometimes corner store food might be all you have access to.

and a bunch of libertarians were just arguing to me that their Republican friends never try to control people.
