Among the classrooms in a previously disused part of Tempe High School a former bus is helping to improve the mental health of Year 12 students.
“At home or school, there’s constant stress and pressure to do something all the time,” said the 17-year-old. But the “in-between place” let students “study in a way that we find benefits us,'' she said.“It’s way more modern and urban, and a place we would hang out at out of school,” she said. “The HSC is one of the most difficult things that you do at such a young age,” he said. “Anything that can help their mental health is good.”Other schools across Sydney are also doing their bit to support students’ mental health. Randwick Boys' High, for example, is looking at offering yoga and meditation.
Western Sydney’s St Marys Senior High School principal Sally Smithard said the number of students, about 450 in each year cohort, means year 11s learn about mindfulness and the year 12s take part in a personal mentoring program where a teacher will mentor up to seven students. A Department of Education spokesman said exam anxiety can affect "the most organised student to the last-minute crammer".
Buses are scary. Give me the train any day.
Good move.,
