JOHANNESBURG - The Life Esidimeni tragedy showed a failure by healthcare professionals and administrators to prioritise the care of seriously ill patients, resulting in the deaths of over 140 psychiatric patients.Gauteng Health MEC, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa provided further updates on misconduct and corruption in her department saying an incident like Esidimeni cannot be allowed to happen again.
At first, Dr Ramokgopa spoke about the positive aspects of growth and accountability in the province.She stated the department would fill 2,000 posts in this financial year. The 12 district hospitals are slated to receive extra staff to ensure they operate for 24 hours a day.Helen Joseph and Charlotte Maxeke hospitals will also open mental health sections soon.
