Opioid painkillers 'must carry prominent warnings'

There are also some opioids available over the counter, such as codeine-based painkillers, which are weaker in strength but can also cause addiction. Codeine, morphine and methadone are among opioids judged by the World Health Organization as essential for treatment of pain and end-of-life care "Painkillers were a major breakthrough in modern medicine and are hugely important to help people manage pain alongside their busy lives but they must be treated with caution.

If you didn't know that opiates were dangerous and addictive after 200 years - check speeches criticizing the BEIC in Parliament prior to the Opium Wars - I don't think a new label is going to help...

This article describes some of the harms relating to opiate and opioid use. However, in the section containing the testimony of a patient it states 'Within two years the medication caused a gastric tear'. (1/2)

Are they going to put these warnings on alcohol too? And ban the abomination that is vaping? Hypocrites.

Do you think addicts care about warnings?

Given that most of these are prescription-only, why not just have the prescribing doctors discuss the meds properly with the patients, and review their use to check if continuing or not is best for the patient at any given time? Many people need these, after all.

It is disgusting, completely disgusting how people with no medical experience can make such a statement! We all know opioids are addictive but with the choice between pain & having some quality of life, addiction is a small price to pay, properly managed! SkyNews

Any chance for a prominent warning on drugs that create dependency and/or cause severe w/drawal effects such as those marketed as Antidepressants?

Deadlier than heroin, cocaine. Warnings justified then.

Flaky policy in the US has turned this into an epidemic. People here in the U.K., despite more stringent prescription criteria, are already becoming addicted to these drugs and most unaware of it. Government and the NHS must act now.

Scary warnings won't do anything. Look at the pictures the put on cig packages and that doesn't seem to have had much effect. Perhaps new forms of painkillers need to be made that won't cause an addiction?
