IPOH: The Ayer Ganda water treatment plant in Hulu Perak is expected to resume operation as the Deputy Health Minister has said the treated water is safe for external use, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu. The Mentri Besar said he had met with Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar and was told that an advisory from the Health Ministry was needed to revoke the shutting down of the plant.

“Maybe SPAN has other information which I am not aware of but I feel the statement by Dr Lee should be enough to rescind the directive,” he told reporters after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Yayasan Sultan Azlan Shah and Imam Response and Relief Team here yesterday. He expressed hope that SPAN would give some leeway as the fasting month was nearing.

“It’s going to be an inconvenience for residents to take water from water tanks for bathing and other usages,” he said, adding that lorry tankers would be deployed to provide water to residents there. On another matter, Ahmad Faizal said they were still in discussions over a deal to sell water to Penang.“We will try to get the best mechanism but we are firm on selling treated water to Penang,” he said.

On the MoU, Ahmad Faizal said it was to install a water treatment system in six orang asli villages in Batang Padang.
