A spike in hospital admissions and increased pressures in the emergency department were highlighted during an inspection of University Hospital Hairmyres.

Despite the pressures within the emergency department, inspectors observed that the area was calm and well led. They were told that when the department is over capacity overnight, four cubicles in the emergency assessment unit are used to prevent patients being cared for in corridors. Speaking of the reports, Donna Maclean, chief inspector at Healthcare Improvement Scotland, said: “During our inspection the hospital, like much of NHS Scotland, was experiencing a significant range of pressures including increased hospital admissions, increased pressures in the emergency department.
