Local grads plan to use their hefty awards to study public policy, engineering, health sciences, computer engineering and more.

Burnaby's high school grads earned millions more in scholarships this year than any class for more than five years, according to the school district.

That's probably more than any grad class before them, but the district only started tracking the totals about five years ago. Major awards secured by local grads include a full scholarship to Harvard University, valued at more than $400,000, won by Burnaby Central Secondary grad Ella Ricketts, who plans to study public policy and government in pursuit of a career in political analytics and law.

Alpha grad Melina Calero earned a $45,000 Cmolik Foundation Scholarship and will study health sciences at Simon Fraser University on route to a career as a pediatric nurse.
