Health Minister Stephen Donnelly told the Seanad on Thursday evening that money that was given to Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) to tackle spinal surgery waiting lists was spent on other things

"The majority" of the €19m allocated to Children’s Health Ireland to deal with spinal surgeries was not used for its intended purpose, Tánaiste Micheál Martin has told the Dáil.

"It is clear to me, from detailed discussions I had with the HSE and CHI, that the majority of the funding intended for spinal services was allocated far more broadly across Children’s Health Ireland than for spinal service," he stated.READ MORE - Auditors to investigate if allocated money being spent on spinal surgeries in CHI Hospitals

In February, Mr Donnelly told the Dáil that HSE auditors were being sent into CHI hospitals to ensure the money was being used for its intended purpose. "CHI informed the Minister that its plan would mean that by the end of 2022 the number of children waiting over four months would be reduced to zero," Mr Martin said.
