Victorians at-risk of mpox are being urged to ensure they are vaccinated against the infectious disease after health authorities in the state reported a rise in cases.

A fresh health alert has been issued over an infectious disease after authorities in one state warned of a"increased risk of local transmission" following a rise in cases.

The vaccine is free for those at-risk of mpox, previously known as monkeypox, including men who have sex with men. "Mpox is not just a disease you can contract overseas - it is spreading locally in Victoria and people at risk need to consider how to best protect themselves," Victorian Acting Chief Health Officer Dr Christian McGrath said.

An individual is considered infectious until a fresh layer of skin has formed once the lesions have crusted and the scabs have fallen off.
