LB.1 is the latest COVID-19 subvariant to make headlines as it circulates in the United States. The highly contagious strain, which emerged shortly after the 'FLiRT' variants, including KP.3 and KP.2, is causing an increasing proportion of infections. As the U.S. sees an uptick in cases and emergency room visits around the country, some are concerned about a summer wave. LB.1 is the third-leading COVID-19 variant in the U.S. right now, trailing close behind the dominant KP.3 and KP.

1 more transmissible? A characteristic of omicron subvariants is that they are very transmissible. 'LB.1 highly contagious, and it is spreading very readily,' says Schaffner. How does LB.1 compare to other new strains? 'It's too soon to tell, but so far, there is no signal that it is more transmissible than the FLiRT variants,' Dr. Bernard Camins, medical director of infection prevention at Mount Sinai Health System, tells TODAY.com.
