Ireland's health officials have issued an urgent norovirus warning after reporting that the country is seeing an "unseasonable" increase in cases.
Typically, norovirus levels peak between December and April, however Ireland's Health Protection Surveillance Centre warned today that this year has seen a surge in cases during the summer months, mirroring trends observed in Europe and the United States. It added that this unusual increase in infections is expected to place additional pressure on healthcare facilities and staff over the coming weeks. Health professionals are being advised to be particularly vigilant, treating all instances of vomiting as potentially infectious and implementing strict hygiene measures to contain outbreaks.
"Norovirus can be unpleasant but it usually clears up by itself in a few days. You can normally look after yourself or your child at home. Try to avoid going to your GP, as norovirus can spread to others very easily.""Some people also have a slight fever, headaches, painful stomach cramps and aching limbs. The symptoms start 1 to 2 days after you become infected and last for up to 2 or 3 days.
