The symptoms of post-treatment Lyme disease can derail normal life, according to scientists.

Scientists predict the number of people to suffer from a little-understood type of Lyme disease could spike to almost 2 million in 2020.

The condition is poorly understood: there is no set diagnosis for it and treatment is controversial, the authors wrote. The cause is unkown—some believe the bug could disrupt the immune system—and it can take months to recover. Past estimates suggest treatments fail in between 10 to 20 percent of cases, which could cost the U.S. economy up to $1 billion per year.

For their study, the scientists drew on several pools of data to create a model to estimate the number of PTLD cases which occurred between 2016 and 2020. That included data collected by the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention as well as past estimates of Lyme disease rates; survival rates; and examples of treatments failing.

ToBeSafeNSound The profit based healthcare system won't call it Lyme Disease though. As the symptoms jump around, they will just prescribe you meds for every different symptom and run you into bankruptcy.

krisnewby So scary!

This disease needs to be taken more seriously, it is horrific.

It is treatable - see ILADS Guidelines!

Don’t forget that Lyme disease can also be transmitted from mom to baby..resulting in babies being born with Lyme. Mothers can be asymptomatic and still transmit Bb to baby. Baby can be asymptomatic at birth just like in HIV and syphilis. More info on

Oh, oh no

I know some people who have struggled with Lyme symptoms for decades. It can be brutal. By contrast, I have been bitten by literally hundreds of ticks (live in Northern Wisconsin), and have never had so much as a rash.

Thank you for sharing!

What is the difference between a tick and a democrat? One is a blood sucking parasite and the other is a small arachnid just trying to live its life.

There are vaccines Out there

Lyme Disease isn’t treatable now...
