U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy is renewing his call for warning labels on social media platforms, saying it's a necessary step to combat concerns over youth mental health. 'The mental health crisis among young people is an emergency — and social media has emerged as an important contributor,' Murthy wrote in a recent New York Times opinion piece. Murthy believes these labels, similar to those seen on tobacco products, could raise awareness and alter behavior.
Despite the criticism, parent advocates believe that a warning label, while not a comprehensive solution, is a step in the right direction. 'Is it going to deter kids who are determined to be on social media? Maybe not. But if it does help raise awareness, if it helps make parents more aware of what the risks are letting their kids be online and beyond these platforms, then I think it's a positive thing,' said Melissa Henson of the Parents Television and Media Council.
