Saudi Arabia's health minister says many of the deaths were caused by pilgrims 'walking long distances under direct sunlight without adequate shelter or comfort'.

More than 1,300 people have died during this year's haj pilgrimage, according to Saudi Arabia's health minister.

Fahad Al-Jalajel, quoted by state television on Sunday, said many of the 1,301 deaths were caused by pilgrims "walking long distances under direct sunlight without adequate shelter or comfort".Some 83 per cent of the fatalities were among people who were not authorised to make the pilgrimage, he said.
