THE United Nations urged the Philippines to boost programs to curb HIV cases and expand treatment services for patients.

'There is a real need to strengthen HIV prevention and treatment services in the Philippines, UN Assistant Secretary General Christine Stegling, who visited Manila last week, said.Stegling is the deputy executive director of the joint UN Program on HIV and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome .She was in the country to secure the government's renewed commitment to expand HIV services and strengthen combination prevention programs and community-led responses.

According to the HIV & AIDS and Antiretroviral Therapy Registry of the Philippines , 129,772 HIV cases were diagnosed between 1984 and March 2024.Stegling met with Rep. Geraldine Roman, key author of the Anti-Discrimination bill in the House of Representatives, to push for increased funding for HIV prevention and the formalization of transgender health services.
