Universiti Teknologi Mara’s consultant cardiologist Dr Sazzli Shahlan Kasim says diabetic patients must practise a healthy lifestyle and have a balance diet.

Diabetics are advised to carry out periodic monitoring to prevent heart failure.

“Even more unfortunate is having heart failure, usually only realised by the patient in five to 15 years after having been diagnosed with diabetes,” he told Bernama on the sidelines of the 11th Diabetes Complications Conference & Grand Round organised by the National Diabetes Institute here yesterday.

“With high level of sugar in the blood and advanced glycation end products or AGEs , the heart will start to harden if the patient walks fast, climbs the stairs, has stress or fever. Sazzli also stressed the importance of consuming low-calorie food but more fibre in the diet to lessen chemical reaction, thus reducing the risk of diabetes and heart failure.
