Ashtabula Regional Medical Center's new four-story, $115 million medical tower will offer private patient rooms, expanded wound care, robotic surgery, emergency rooms tailored for mental health patients and more. The new facility also will allow residents to get health care close to home.
More importantly, the new facility will allow patients to get quality healthcare close to their homes, said Ashtabula Regional Medical Center CEO Leonard Stepp.Ashtabula County Medical Center later this month month will change its name to the Ashtabula Regional Medical Center, reflecting the medical center’s reach across the surrounding region, Stepp said.
It serves a mostly rural population that is aging, high in poverty and underserved in terms of specialized physicians, Stepp said. Ashtabula hospital caregivers often help patients with more than their health care needs, such as helping them find food banks or sign up for health insurance, he said. High-tech medical equipment will be built into each room. As patients improve, they can stay in the same room instead of having to move to another part of the hospital.It will expand from 18 to 24 rooms in the new tower. Four emergency department rooms will be especially designated for behavioral health patients. Previously, the emergency department had only one room dedicated for behavioral health patients.
Currently, the hospital’s campus includes North and South wings, which both have patient beds. In the new configuration, both towers will remain open, but only South wings will still have patient beds, Stasiewski said. The Ashtabula County Historical Society displays costumes used in the 2022 PBS documentary “Engineering Tragedy: The Ashtabula Train Disaster" at its museum in Geneva-on-the-Lake. The train disaster led to the founding of the Ashtabula Regional Medical Center.Ashtabula still keeps alive the memory of the train disaster, which has been called one of the most deadly bridge failures of the 19th century.
