Barbara Paldus is the founder of biotech company Codex Labs and an expert on all things skincare, skin health and skin science. Here, she explains everything there is to know about the skin microbiome, essential to our health

Each area of your body has its own unique microbiome of viruses, fungi, and bacteria. While that might sound a little stomach turning, it’s actually essential, and this microbiome keeps us healthy.

The microbial diversity of these colonies also depends on where they are located on the skin and that location’s microenvironment. This is because microorganisms feed on sweat and oil released by skin when it is cooling and lubricating itself. Then there are skin areas of the skin that are dry and cool, such as forearms or hands, that have fewer colonies due to the relative scarcity of nutrients and frequent washing. Many microorganisms on our skin are harmless to healthy individuals. There are microorganisms considered beneficial and those that are pathogenic.

Additionally, the skin microbiome supports the barrier function to prevent pathogens from penetrating the skin barrier and causing infection.
