Health P.E.I.’s new CEO is providing a warmer reception than her predecessor to plans to open a new satellite medical faculty at UPEI in 2025.
“He would say that the quality of medical education is really dependent on the health system it’s embedded in. And I say the quality of the health system is really dependent on it being a learning system,” Fraser said.The previous CEO of Health P.E.I., Michael Gardam raised concerns about the province’s strained health capacity after the COVID-19 pandemic. He also said engagement with physicians had been lacking.
Currently, the province has 52 physician vacancies out of a total complement of 288 while more than 38,000 P.E.I. residents lack access to a primary care provider. The province’s second largest hospital also does not have a functioning intensive care unit due to a shortage of internal medicine specialists.
